Tariff of 1816 (2)

Page history last edited by Sherry Ren 14 years, 5 months ago

Tariff of 1816 was the first protective tariffs passed by the Congress. It was intended to help the American factories. This tariff allowed the federal government to loan to industrialists and also increased the costs of European goods in America  by levying a series of 25 percent duties. . American factories were unable to produce manufactured goods as cheaply as the European factories. So, in order to make their price comparable to the European goods, the government used the Tariff of 1816 to impose taxes on European goods. By doing this, the government expected more people to buy domestic products which helped the development of American’s industries.

This tariff was primarily for protection, and not actually revenue. Their rates were not actually high enough to truly lead the way to full-fledged American dependency of goods, but more as a bold beginning signifying what they are willing to do, as nationalism. Henry Clay supported it because it would lead to the American System which created a great deal of infrastructure.

Supporters of this tarriff were former War Hawks, while Daniel Webster and John C. Calhoun were against it. Good definition!
