Adams Onis Treaty (Transcontinental Treaty) (6th)

Page history last edited by Lindsey Thompson 13 years, 5 months ago

The Adams Onis Treaty (aka Transcontinental Treaty or Florida Treaty) is the treaty signed by John Quincy Adams and Louis de Onis where Spain gave  Florida and the Spanish area of Oregon to the United States. In return, the U.S. gave the Spanish their claim to Texas. The western boundary now ran zigzag along the Rocky Mountains and divided Orgeon from the Spanish Holdings.

Great Job! The reason for the treaty was when Jackson went to Flordia in 1818 to keep the Indians in check, he hung two British soldiers for selling guns to the Indians. England became very mad but Adams convinced the Spanish to sell Flordia

Another good site with information on the Adams Onis Treaty is: http://digital.library.okstate.edu/encyclopedia/entries/a/ad004.html
Secretary of State John Quincy Adams was behind the idea of the Treaty. The Adams Onis Treaty was signed on February 22, 1819. The senate approved the treaty in February 24, 1819, but the Spanish authorities did not approve of it until 1821. The senate and President Monroe approved it again in February of 1821.
