what sparked the writing of this book is that she heard from the ponca chief that the government forcibly moved them out of their homeland and relocated to the Dakota Nebraska border where a lot of them died of diseases. And when the survivors plus the ponca chief tried to return to their homeland they were pursued my the military arrested and sent back.

Nice definition. Interestingly, her novel was probably out of place with the literature of her time, as people transitioned from Romanticism to Realism.
